Geography
The name Oshimili is the Igbo word for the River Niger, a reminder that the LGA’s towns and villages sit close to the river’s east bank. Oshimili North lies in the northern part of Delta State, fronting the Niger a short distance from Asaba, the state capital. The river forms the LGA’s western edge and separates Delta State from Anambra State. Oshimili North borders Oshimili South to the south, Aniocha North to the northwest, and Ndokwa East to the east. It shares its riverine setting with Asaba and Onitsha, the two large cities that face each other across the Niger further downstream. Oshimili North is one of the LGAs of Delta State (all Delta State LGAs).

Most residents are Enuani-speaking Igbo, though Ebu, one of the LGA’s eight main towns, speaks Igala and traces its founding to Idah, across the Niger in Kogi State. Farming and riverside fishing shape daily life across the rural wards, with cassava, yam and vegetables grown for local and Asaba markets. Ibusa and Okpanam, the LGA’s larger towns, hold periodic markets that draw traders from neighbouring communities. Closeness to Asaba also supports trading, transport and civil-service work for many residents, since Delta State’s main government offices sit in Asaba, a short commute from Ibusa, Okpanam and Akwukwu-Igbo. Akwukwu-Igbo and Ibusa lie just north of Asaba, Delta State’s capital, and are reached by road from the Asaba–Benin Expressway. Ibusa and Okpanam are a short drive from the Niger Bridge, which links Asaba to Onitsha in Anambra State, giving the LGA road access across the river. Asaba International Airport, in neighbouring Oshimili South, is the closest airport for anyone flying into the area, with domestic flights connecting Asaba to Lagos and Abuja. From Asaba, minor roads run north into Oshimili North toward Akwukwu-Igbo, Illah and the LGA’s other riverine towns. Travellers coming from Benin City and further into Edo State reach Oshimili North via the Asaba–Benin Expressway, passing through Asaba before turning off toward Ibusa or Okpanam.
