Uyo

Uyo is the capital of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, and the seat of Uyo Local Government Area. The LGA recorded a population of 305,961 at the 2006 census, projected near 390,400 by 2022. It covers about 362 square kilometres at the state’s centre, around 5°02′N 7°55′E. Beyond the city wards, the LGA is home ground for four Ibibio clans — Offot, Etoi, Ikono and Oku — whose 77 villages are listed below.

Geography

Uyo LGA sits on the gently rolling coastal plain of central Akwa Ibom, mostly between 30 and 65 metres above sea level. The soils are the loose coastal-plain sands typical of the region, and deep gully erosion is a long-standing problem — the Uyo ravine cuts close to the city core, and several clan villages sit along smaller gullies.

The Ikpa River drains the northern part of the LGA, flowing past the University of Uyo’s permanent site toward the Cross River estuary. Uyo shares boundaries with Itu and Ibiono Ibom to the north, Uruan to the east, Nsit Ibom and Ibesikpo Asutan to the south, and Etinan and Abak to the south-west and west.

Demographics

The people are overwhelmingly Ibibio, organised through the Offot, Etoi, Ikono and Oku clans, each with its own village heads and paramount-ruler structure. Ibibio is the everyday language; English is the language of government, schools and business. As the state capital, Uyo also hosts large Annang, Oron, Igbo and other communities drawn by work and trade. Christianity is the dominant religion, with a dense spread of churches across both the city and the villages.

Economy & Local Life

Government is the biggest employer. The state secretariat, ministries, the state house of assembly and council offices anchor thousands of civil-service jobs, and banking, construction and hospitality have grown around them. Akpan Andem Market is the city’s main daily market for foodstuff, textiles and household goods, alongside smaller neighbourhood markets and the Ibom Plaza commercial ring at the city centre.

In the clan villages, farming still matters: cassava, yam, maize, plantain and vegetables for food, with oil palm and raffia palm as the main tree crops. Palm wine tapping and raffia craftwork remain common in the Ikono and Oku areas. The University of Uyo and a cluster of state institutions add student housing, transport and services to the local economy.

Getting There

Uyo is the hub of Akwa Ibom’s road network. The Aba–Ikot Ekpene–Uyo road links it west toward Aba, roughly 65 kilometres away, and on to Port Harcourt in about three hours. The Calabar–Itu highway runs north-east through Itu to Calabar, about 95 kilometres by road. Ikot Ekpene Road, Abak Road, Oron Road and Aka Road fan out from the city ring to the neighbouring LGAs. Victor Attah International Airport lies about 24 kilometres south-east of the city along Airport Road, with daily flights to Lagos and Abuja.
