The Eket people refer to themselves and their language with the endonym Ekid, although Europeans spell and pronounce the word as “Eket.”

The town is an industrial metropolis that has merged with surrounding settlements. The Office of the Surveyor-General of Akwa Ibom State estimates Eket Local Government Size’s area as 176.000 square km and its population at 172,856.  The Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Economic Development estimates Eket’s 2013 population at 218,438 with a density of 1,241/sq km.
