Aguata is a Local Government Area in Anambra State, south-eastern Nigeria, situated near coordinates 5.95° N, 7.07° E in the Anambra South senatorial district. The LGA covers approximately 245 km² and recorded a 2006 census population of 369,972, with a 2022 projection near 527,200. the township postal code is 422111, anchored on Ekwulobia, the major commercial centre. Geography

Aguata occupies the rolling hill-country of southern Anambra, bounded north by Orumba North, south by Orumba South, east by Imo State and west by Nnewi South. The terrain rises from about 200 m at the Imo River basin to 380 m on the Ekwulobia ridge. Tropical rainforest mixes with derived savanna.

The 2006 census recorded 369,972 residents; the 2022 projection is 527,200. The population is overwhelmingly Igbo, with strong traditional age-grade and kindred systems. Igbo and English are the working languages, and Christianity predominates.

Economy and Local Life

Ekwulobia is one of Anambra’s busiest commercial towns and the LGA’s economic engine, with thriving textile, motor parts and provisions markets. Igbo-Ukwu is internationally renowned for the 9th-century bronze artifacts excavated there, anchoring a small cultural-tourism economy. Agriculture (yam, cassava, palm oil) persists on the rural fringe.

Aguata is split between two headquarters sites — most council offices sit in Aguluezechukwu while the busier business centre is Ekwulobia. The LGA contains 14 autonomous communities each functioning as a ward.

History

The Igbo-Ukwu bronzes were discovered in 1939 by a well-digger, then formally excavated in 1959 and 1964 by archaeologist Thurstan Shaw. The bronzes and beads date to c. 800–900 AD, evidence of one of Africa’s oldest known metalworking traditions. Aguata LGA was carved out of the old Aguata–Orumba LGA in 1991.

Getting There

The Onitsha–Enugu expressway passes north of the LGA; the Onitsha–Owerri expressway runs to the west. Akanu Ibiam International Airport (Enugu) lies 70 km north-east; Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport (Owerri) is 45 km south.
