Geography
Idemili South spans both flood-plain wetlands near the Niger and the rolling Awka uplands rising to 250 m at Awka-Etiti and Alor. The River Idemili flows through the territory westward toward the Niger. The LGA is bounded north by Idemili North, west by Ogbaru, south by Nnewi North and east by Anaocha.

The 2006 census recorded 206,816 residents on 700 km²; the 2022 projection is 294,700. The population is overwhelmingly Igbo of the Idemili sub-group, with strong commercial and diaspora ties. Igbo and English are the working languages.

Nnobi is the LGA’s largest market town and hosts the famous Eke Nnobi market. Alor and Awka-Etiti are noted for produce trade and education, hosting several prominent secondary schools. Idemili South LGA was created in 1996 from the parent Idemili LGA, which was split into Idemili North (the Onitsha-adjacent towns) and Idemili South (the upland communities).

The Onitsha–Owerri expressway runs through Oba and along the western edge of the LGA. The Niger Bridge connecting Onitsha to Asaba is 15 km north. The nearest airports are Asaba International (40 km north-west) and Sam Mbakwe Cargo (Owerri, 55 km south).
