The Katcha local government council was created in 1981 to bring government closer to the people. The council was created from Gbako Local Government, which has its headquarters in Bida and traditional administrative districts in Bida, Katcha, Badeggi, Lemu, and Edozhigi.
Katcha Local Government started in 1982 under Alhaji Awal Ibrahim. Due to military involvement, the local government council was merged back to Bida until December 1996, when the Abacha Administration formed new states and local government councils. This decision created the federally-backed Katcha Local Government council.
Since then, the council has operated as an administration organisation and changed leadership democratically or by appointment.
