The local government area has produced important personalities in Enugu State and Nigeria, including former Speaker Abel Chukwu, former PDP state chairman Late Igwe Onyioha Nwanjoku (Ndumeze 1 of Ndumeze), and current DSP Ike Ekweremmadu. Aninri borders Nkanu-East and Awgu. Old Awgu LGA was renamed in 1996. Awgu South LGA was its name until political authorities decided to change it. Local council areas focus on agriculture.
