The Scottish Borders, also known as “the Marches” in Scots and “Crìochan na h-Alba” in Scottish Gaelic, is one of Scotland’s 32 council areas.

The council areas of the City of Edinburgh, Dumfries and Galloway, East Lothian, Midlothian, South Lanarkshire, and West Lothian are all nearby.

To the south-west, south, and east are the English unitary authorities of Cumberland and Northumberland.

The area’s government centre is in Newtown St. Boswells.

People also call the parts of southern Scotland and northern England that form the border between England and Scotland “the Borders” or “the Scottish Borders.”
