One of Scotland’s 32 council areas is North Ayrshire, which is written in Gaelic as Siorrachd Àir a Tuath and pronounced [ˈʃirˠəxk aːɾʲ ə ˈt̥ʰuə].
Inverclyde is to the north, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire are to the northeast, and East Ayrshire and South Ayrshire are to the east and south, respectively.
This area is run by the North Ayrshire Council, which was created in 1996 from the same land that was in the Cunninghame district from 1975 to 1996.
The council area is in the west central Lowlands, with the Firth of Clyde to its west.
It includes the northern part of the historic county of Ayrshire as well as the islands of Arran and The Cumbraes from the historic county of Buteshire.
There are about 134,220 people living in North Ayrshire.
Irvine and Kilwinning are its two biggest towns.
