One of Scotland’s 32 council areas is East Renfrewshire, which is also known as Aest Renfrewshire in Scots and Siorrachd Rinn Friù an Ear in Scottish Gaelic.

It took the place of the Eastwood district in the Strathclyde region in 1996.

The northeastern part of the council area is close to Glasgow, and many of the towns in the northern part of the council area are in the Greater Glasgow urban area.

From northeast to southeast, East Renfrewshire is surrounded by the Glasgow City council area.

To the southwest, it is surrounded by East Ayrshire, to the west by North Ayrshire, and to the northwest, it is surrounded by Renfrewshire.
