Maigatari is a border village along the Niger-Nigeria border in the Sahel. The town is renowned for its 1870-established big market for selling horses, camels, cattle, and other animals between Niger, Mali, Chad, and Cameroon.

The majority of the town’s residents are Hausa, Fulani, and Kanuri. According to the 2006 census, the town has an area of 870 km2 and a population of 179,715 people. It is located 144.6 kilometres north of Kano and was a part of Kano State until 1991, when Jigawa State became independent.
