Kukawa Towns And Villages
Kukawa is a Local Government Area in Borno State, Nigeria, on the shore of Lake Chad. Its headquarters, the town of Kukawa (formerly Kuka), served as capital of the Kanem-Bornu Empire from 1846 to 1893, after Muhammad al-Amin al-Kanemi founded it in 1814.
The 2006 census counted 203,343 residents across the LGA; projections put the 2022 figure near 297,900. Kukawa holds ten wards: Alagarno, Baga, Bundur, Dogoshi, Doro/Duguri, Kauwa, Kekeno, Kukawa, Moduari/Barwari and Yoyo. Kanuri and Shuwa Arab communities farm, fish and trade along the lake’s shrinking shoreline.
Baga, the LGA’s other major town, was destroyed in a 2015 insurgent attack and has been under ISWAP control since December 2018; it appears below as the well-documented, named place it is.
