Kolokuma/Opokuma Towns And Villages
Kolokuma/Opokuma is a Local Government Area in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, along the Nun River roughly 30 kilometres north of Yenagoa. Its headquarters sits at Kaiama. The 2006 census counted 79,266 residents across 361 square kilometres; the 2022 projection puts the figure near 118,000.
The LGA holds 11 wards and 144 polling units, split between the Kolokuma clan around Odi and Kaiama and the Opokuma clan further south around Sabagreia. Its postal code is 560102. Much of the terrain sits inside the Bayelsa National Forest, and most settlements are reached only by boat along the Nun River and its creeks.
Odi, the LGA’s largest town, is best known nationally for the November 1999 military raid that followed the killing of police officers there. Ijaw is the dominant ethnicity; residents speak the Izon language, and many village names carry the Ijaw suffixes “-ama” (settlement) and “-gbene” (creek-side camp).
