Geography
Ihitte/Uboma lies in the rainforest belt of southeastern Nigeria, in the Okigwe zone of Imo State. The land is low-lying farmland broken by streams and pockets of forest and oil palm.
The LGA borders Ehime Mbano to the north-west, Isiala Mbano to the west and Obowo to the south. Ihitte/Uboma and Obowo together made up the old Etiti division, and the name survives in local usage. To the east the boundary runs toward neighbouring Abia, on the Umuahia axis.
Demographics
The people are Igbo, and Igbo is the everyday language alongside English in schools and offices. Christianity is the dominant religion, with Catholic and Anglican parishes in most communities. At the 2006 count the LGA held roughly 1,100 people per square kilometre, dense even by Imo standards, spread across small kindred villages rather than one large town.
Economy & Local Life
Farming carries the local economy. Households grow cassava, yam, maize, oil palm and vegetables on smallholdings, and palm oil pressing is a steady trade. Markets follow the four-day Igbo week of Eke, Orie, Afor and Nkwo. Settlement names on the list preserve those market days: Afor Ukwu means the big Afor market, and Isi Orie marks an Orie market head. Isinweke, as the headquarters, holds the council secretariat and the main cluster of banks, schools and civil-service jobs.
Getting There
From Owerri, take the Owerri–Umuahia road east and branch north through Obowo to reach Isinweke. From Okigwe, southbound roads run through Ehime Mbano into the LGA. Motorcycles and shared cabs cover the last stretch between villages; the ward roads are earth surfaces that get heavy in the rainy season.
