Ibiono Ibom has 9 clans, 33 groupings, and 193 settlements. It encompasses 2761.76 km2 and has 385,145 residents. Odukpani, Arochukwu, Itu, Ikono, Uyo, and Ini are its neighbours (Akwa Ibom State).
Oko Ita is Ibiono-capital. Ibom’s
Itu Local government Area was founded in December 1996.
Mary Slessor died here in 1915. Her Cairn at Use Ikot Oku is magnificent.
Central Ibiono dominates Ibiono Ibom’s politics. The town’s PDP dominates politics (Nigeria). Ibiono Ibom’s supreme chief is called “Okuku.”
Christians predominate.
Ibibio people speak a dialect of Ibibio in the LGA. The Ibibio language is part of the Benue–Congo family of Niger–Congo languages.
Despite the Ibibio’s homogeneity, no central administration existed before the 1904 British invasion.
Oko Ita was chosen as Ibiono Ibom LGA’s headquarters to disseminate development to all districts.
Ibiono Ibom in old Itu LGA were the first to meet Western education in Akwa Ibom State with the creation of Mission School, Aka Iko Udo Eno, 1939; Mary Slessor secondary school, 1950; and other elite institutions such as Ididep Science College (previously Teachers’ Training College, Ididep). Across the local government, post-primary institutions have sprouted up.
