It’s one of Akwa Ibom’s four major LGAs and the cradle of the Ibibio people. It occupies Akwa-Ibom State’s northern border, close to Ini local government. The ibibios, the state’s main ethnic group, live there.

Ikono is one of the state’s four major LGAs, along with oruk Anam, Ibiono-Ibom, and Essien Udim. It was created from Itu LGA on September 1996. Ikono farmers grow palm, kolanut, cassava, maize, and melon for income and food. Traders, they cook a soup called “efere nsanai” for weddings, funerals, and civic gatherings. People of Ikono trace their roots to “Ibom” in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, from which they migrated to today’s Ibibio area.

Ikono LGA possesses salt, sand, rock, and crude oil. Oil palm, kola nut, cocoa, melon, maize, cassava, and plantain are cultivated extensively in Ikono LGA. Ikono LGA promotes trade by hosting the Obo daily market. Ikono residents fish and log.
