Kukawa (formerly Kuka) is a town and Local Government Area in Borno state in northeastern Nigeria, near Lake Chad.
Muhammad al-Amin al-Kanemi, a Muslim scholar and warlord, created the town in 1814 as the new capital of the Kanem-Bornu Empire, following the loss of the former city, Ngazargamu.
As one of the southern terminus of trans-Saharan trade routes to Tripoli, the city was of immense strategic significance.
