Torfaen is a county borough in the southeast of Wales.
Its name comes from the Cymru, which means “torfaen.”
To the east is the county of Monmouthshire, to the south is the city of Newport, and to the north and south-west are the county boroughs of Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent.
This area used to be a district of Gwent from 1974 to 1996, but in 1996 it was made a principal area again. It is now in the historic county of Monmouthshire.
An old name for the river that flows through the county borough is Torfaen, which means “breaker of stones.”
Today, the river is called Afon Lwyd, which means “grey river.”
It starts north of Blaenavon and flows south through Abersychan, Pontypool, and Cwmbran. The last three towns are all part of the same urban area.
