Bridgend is a place name in English and Welsh. It means “the end of the bridge on the Ogmore” (Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr or just Pen-y-bont).
The town is in the Bridgend County Borough of Wales. It is 20 km west of Cardiff and 32 km east of Swansea.
The name of the town comes from the old bridge that crossed the River Ogmore.
The town is also crossed by the River Ewenny. It had 49,597 people living in it in 2021.
Bridgend is in the Cardiff Capital Region, which had about 1.54 million people living in it in 2019.
Bridgend used to be part of Glamorgan, but it has grown a lot since the early 1980s.
The town had a population of 39,429 people in the 2001 census, and the Bridgend Local Authority had a population of 139,200 people in 2011, up from 128,700 in 2001.
