Newport, whose Welsh name is Casnewydd (pronounced [kasˈnɛwɨð]), is a city and county borough in Wales.

It is on the River Usk, 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Cardiff, near where it meets the Severn Estuary.

At the 2011 census, 145,700 people lived in Newport, making it the third-largest authority with city status in Wales and the seventh most populous in the country as a whole.

In 1996, Newport became a unitary authority. It is now a part of the Cardiff-Newport metropolitan area.

The Newport Rising of 1839 was the last large-scale armed uprising in Great Britain. It happened in Newport.

With 159,587 people, the population grew a lot during the 2021 census, making it the largest growth of any unitary authority in Wales.

It is 138 miles (222 km) west of London and 12 miles (19 km) east of Cardiff. It is the biggest city in both the historic county of Monmouthshire and the preserved county of Gwent.
