Monmouthshire is a county in the southeast of Wales.
Its name comes from the Welsh language words for the area.
If you look at the map, it has Powys to the north, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire in the east and north, the Severn Estuary to the south, and Torfaen, Newport, and Blaenau Gwent to the west.
The county seat is Usk, and the largest town is Abergavenny.
The county is mostly rural, but it is close to the city of Newport and the more urbanised South Wales Valleys.
It covers 330 square miles (850 km2) and has 93,000 people living in it.
Most people live in Chepstow (12,350), Monmouth (10,508), and Caldicot (9,813). The next largest town is Abergavenny (12,515).
In 2021, only 8.2% of the people in the county spoke Welsh, which was one of the lowest percentages in Wales.
