Geography
Ukwa East sits in the south of Abia State, bordering Akwa Ibom State and Rivers State. The Azumini Blue River, known for its clear water, runs through the LGA near the town of Azumini. Ukwa East is one of the LGAs of Abia State (all Abia State LGAs), and it borders Ukwa West to the west, the LGA that shares the Obehie–Akwete road corridor with it. Rainfall is heavy from March through November, and cloud cover stays high for most of the year; average temperatures sit around 26°C. The LGA is divided into 10 wards recognised by INEC for federal elections, though the Abia State government recognises 14 wards locally.
Economy & Local Life
Akwete is the home of Akwete cloth, a handwoven textile made by local women on vertical looms and traded across West Africa. Weavers pass the craft down through generations, working cotton and raffia into patterned cloth used for ceremonies and everyday wear. In the early 19th century, before the cloth trade took hold, Akwete served as a landing point for the trans-Atlantic slave trade; the town later shifted into the palm oil trade as that traffic ended. Today most households in Ukwa East depend on farming, general trade, animal husbandry, fishing and wood carving. The Azumini Blue River supports fishing and small river trade in the communities along its banks, and its clear water draws visitors to Azumini town itself.
History
Akwete’s early prominence came from its position on trade routes controlled by Igbo and Ijaw middlemen in the 19th century. Jaja, later known as Jaja of Opobo, passed through the area around 1830 before rising to become king of the Opobo city-state. As the slave trade wound down, Akwete’s traders turned to palm oil, and its weavers built the reputation that still defines the town: Akwete cloth remains one of the best-known handwoven textiles in Nigeria. Two accounts explain the town’s name: one traces it to the rope palm-tree climbers once used, the other to the local weaving technology itself. Akwete belongs to the Umuihueze II clan and is counted among the Ndoki communities of Igbo-speaking Abia State. Christianity is the main religion in Ukwa East today, alongside traditional Omenala practices that remain part of local life.
Getting There
Akwete, the LGA headquarters, lies about 18 km (11 miles) southeast of Aba, Abia State’s commercial city, and roughly the same distance northeast of Port Harcourt. The main route runs off the Aba–Port Harcourt highway at Obehie Junction, then follows the Obehie–Akwete–Azumini–Ukanafun road east through Ukwa East toward Akwa Ibom State. Local reporting has repeatedly described long stretches of this road, especially between Obehie and Akwete, as heavily potholed, so a rough ride should be expected outside the Aba–Port Harcourt highway itself.
