In April 2007 Governorship elections, Tai LGA had a 99.6% turnout. Rotimi Amaechi, also of the PDP, was declared governor after Celestine Omehia’s election was invalidated.

Shell Nigeria operates most of the LGA’s oil wells and pipelines. Oil extraction hasn’t benefited the local populace, and infrastructure is inadequate.
The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People launched a violent fight against land degradation in the 1990s.
In June 2001, a broken oil pipeline in Baraale spewed crude oil onto adjacent forests, farmlands, and homes.
The spilled oil caught fire in October 2001, inflicting considerable environmental harm. Violence, abduction, and arson plague the region.
