On May 16, 1989, under Hon. Eziwoke Wokoma, Asari-Toru LGA was constituted from Degema LGA. The Kalabari-speaking folks have ancestral origins and beliefs. Hon. Onengiyeofori George is local government chairman.
Asari-Toru is the “Seat” of the Kalabari Speaking Dynasty’s Ancestral Stool, which spans Akuku-Toru and Degema LGAs.
Buguma City is the seat of King (Prof.) T.J.T Princewill, Abbi the XI, Amayanabo of Kalabari Kingdom.
These communities are divided into 13 electoral wards, ten of which are in Buguma City and the rest in Isia Group I, Isia Group II, and West Central Group.
