Geography
Akuku-Toru lies in the mangrove and brackish-water belt of the western Niger Delta on the Sombreiro estuary. The terrain is flat at sea level, with extensive creeks, fishing channels and tidal swamps. The LGA is bounded east by Asari-Toru, south by the Atlantic Ocean and west by Degema.

The Kalabari kingdom traces its origins to migrations from the Central Niger Delta in the 14th–15th centuries, with Abonnema founded in 1882 as a breakaway settlement from old Kalabari (New Calabar). Akuku-Toru LGA was carved out of Degema LGA in 1991 during the Babangida administration’s state-creation exercise.

Akuku-Toru is reached by boat from Port Harcourt and Degema along the Sombreiro river network, or by road and ferry via Buguma. Port Harcourt International Airport is approximately 60 km east by road plus boat connection.
