Ikwuano LGA was among the new local government units established on August 27, 1991, when the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida formed Abia State from the former Imo State. It emerged from the former Ikwuano-Umuahia Local Government Area. It is one of the five local government areas that comprise the Abia Central Senatorial District. Chief Chima Onyemachi is the first executive chairman of the company.
Ikwuano is home to the esteemed Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, The National Crop Research Institute, and Government College Umuahia. It is well-known for its agricultural operations (farming), with an emphasis on palm oil/carnal, cocoa cassava, yam, broom, and basket, among others.
