Geography
Uhunmwonde covers about 2,033 square kilometres of lowland rainforest belt, one of the largest land areas of any Edo LGA. The terrain is gently rolling, with farmland and secondary forest along the Benin–Auchi corridor and thicker forest away from the road.
To the south and southwest it meets Ikpoba-Okha and Orhionmwon, the LGAs on Benin City’s eastern flank. To the northeast, past Ehor, the highway crosses into Esan West toward Ekpoma. Settlement is densest along the highway villages of Ehor, Igieduma and Ugoneki; much of the eastern interior is sparsely populated forest.
Demographics
The people are Bini (Edo), and the LGA sits within the historic Benin Kingdom; village heads answer to the Oba of Benin through traditional structures. Edo is the everyday language, with English used in schools and offices. Christianity is widespread alongside Edo traditional religion, whose shrines remain active in older communities such as Okhuaihe.
At the 2006 census the density worked out to roughly 60 people per square kilometre — low for Edo South, reflecting the LGA’s large forested area. Most residents live in the ward towns and the villages strung along the highway.
Economy & Local Life
Farming and trading sustain most households. Food crops include yams, cassava, plantain and cocoyam, while cocoa and pineapple are notable cash crops of this stretch of Edo’s farm belt, alongside oil palm. Roadside stalls at Ehor and other highway villages sell plantain, pineapple and yams to travellers on the Benin–Auchi road.
Lumbering, food processing and animal rearing add to farm incomes, drawing on the LGA’s forest reserves. Egba market, in Umagbae South ward, is a significant commercial hub, and produce moves daily to the large markets of Benin City.
Getting There
The Benin–Auchi highway runs through the LGA, making it the main gateway between Benin City and Edo Central and North. Ehor, the headquarters, lies about 40 kilometres northeast of Benin City — under an hour’s drive. From Ehor the same road continues to Ekpoma and on to Auchi. Benin Airport, in Benin City, is the nearest airport.
