Ashburn is the county seat.
On August 18, 1905, the county was established and named for Henry Gray Turner, a U.S. representative and Georgia state Supreme Court justice.
The county has a total area of 290 square miles (750 km2), of which 285 square miles (740 km2) is land and 4.6 square miles (12 km2) (1.6%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
