History

Georgia’s General Assembly formed Troup County on 9 June 1826, on land the Creek Nation
ceded under the 1825 Treaty of Indian Springs. It was named for George Troup, the state’s
34th governor. By 1860, Troup ranked as Georgia’s fourth-wealthiest county, its economy built
on cotton plantations worked by a large enslaved population.

In September 1940, a white mob took Austin Callaway, a Black teenager held in the LaGrange
jail, and lynched him; no one was ever charged. The NAACP established its first Troup County
chapter in direct response. Textile manufacturing, once the county’s economic backbone,
declined through the late 20th century and gave way to auto-parts manufacturing and tourism
around West Point Lake.
