Twiggs County lies in Georgia’s Coastal Plain, a rolling landscape of pine woods and farmland just east of Macon. The county covers 358 square miles of land and 4.2 square miles of water, and the geographical center of Georgia falls within its borders. Small creeks feeding the Ocmulgee River drain much of the county, and the river itself forms part of the western boundary with Bibb County. Elevations across the county are modest, generally ranging from a few hundred feet along the Ocmulgee bottomlands up to gently rolling ridges further inland, and much of the land remains in pine plantation, pasture, and row-crop farmland rather than dense development.

History
Twiggs County was created on December 14, 1809, from land that had earlier belonged to Wilkinson County, and was named for John Twiggs, a Georgia militia general during the American Revolutionary War. Jeffersonville was established as the county seat and remains the only sizable town in the county today. Like much of central Georgia, Twiggs County’s economy through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries centred on cotton and other row-crop agriculture worked on plantations and, later, tenant farms; that agrarian pattern shaped the county’s small, dispersed settlements more than it favored the growth of a large town.
Kaolin clay mining, a major industry across this stretch of central Georgia’s “fall line,” has also played a role in the local economy, with deposits worked in and around the Dry Branch area for decades. The county’s population has stayed relatively stable over the past several decades, holding in the 8,000-to-9,000 range through multiple census counts.
