Kellogg is the largest city.
The county was founded in 1864 and was named after the Shoshone tribe of Native Americans.
Because of its century-long mining heritage, Shoshone County is also known as the Silver Valley.
The Silver Valley is well-known throughout the country for the large amounts of silver, lead, and zinc mined there.
The county has a total area of 2,635 square miles (6,820 km2), of which 2,630 square miles (6,800 km2) is land and 5.5 square miles (14 km2) (0.2%) is water.
