The Idaho Legislature split Cassia County into two parts on January 30, 1913, to make this county.
It was named after a hydroelectric power plant at the American Falls that was built in 1902.
The county has a total area of 1,443 square miles (3,740 km2), of which 1,404 square miles (3,640 km2) are land and 38 square miles (98 km2) (2.7%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
