The population was 20,613 according to the 2020 census.

Greenville is the county seat and home to the Meriwether County Courthouse.

The county was established on December 14, 1827, as Georgia’s 73rd county.

It was named after David Meriwether, a Georgia congressman and American Revolutionary War general.

Meriwether County is included in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Combined Statistical Area.

The county has a total area of 505 square miles (1,310 km2), of which 501 square miles (1,300 km2) is land and 4.2 square miles (11 km2) (0.8%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
