Geography
Meriwether County lies in the Piedmont region of west-central Georgia, a rolling landscape of hardwood and pine forest cut by small creeks that feed the Flint River basin to the east. Pine Mountain, a low ridge in the county’s southwest corner, gives its name to the resort town on its slopes and to the state park that spans the Meriwether–Harris line. Of the county’s 505 square miles, 501 square miles are land and 4.2 square miles are water.

History
Meriwether County was created on December 14, 1827, as Georgia’s 73rd county, formed from Troup County land. It was named for David Meriwether, a Revolutionary War veteran, U.S. congressman, and treaty negotiator with the Creek Nation. The county’s mineral springs, particularly at Warm Springs, drew visitors from the 19th century onward; Franklin D. Roosevelt first came to the springs in 1924 seeking relief from polio and later built the Little White House there, using it as a retreat throughout his presidency.
