The county was made on December 15, 1817, and named after Colonel Joseph Habersham, who served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.

The Cornelia, GA Micropolitan Statistical Area is made up of Habersham County.

The county has a total area of 279 square miles (720 km2), of which 277 square miles (720 km2) are land and 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2) (0.8%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The county is in the part of the Appalachian Mountains called the Blue Ridge Mountains.

A part of the Chattahoochee National Forest is also in the county.
