The county was named for Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Gwinnett County is part of the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Combined Statistical Area.
It is located around 10 miles northeast of Atlanta.
The county has a total area of 437 square miles (1,130 km2), of which 430 square miles (1,100 km2) is land and 6.4 square miles (17 km2) (1.5%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
