Dougherty County is located in the southwestern part of the state of Georgia in the United States.
The population was 85,790 at the time of the 2020 census.
Albany is the county seat and the only incorporated city.
Dougherty County is part of the Albany, GA Combined Statistical Area.
It is part of the Black Belt of the South and was historically dominated by cotton plantation cultivation in the nineteenth century.
On December 15, 1853, the Georgia State Assembly formed the county from a portion of Baker County.
It was named after Charles Dougherty, a well-known judge and attorney from Athens, Georgia. Worth County contributed tiny territories in 1854 and 1856.
The county has a total area of 335 square miles (870 km2), of which 329 square miles (850 km2) is land and 5.9 square miles (15 km2) (1.8%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
