Becker County was established on March 18, 1858.
It was named after George Loomis Becker, one of three men elected to the United States Congress when Minnesota became a state.
Becker chose to stay behind because Minnesota could only send two, and he was promised a county named after him.
The county covers 1,445 square miles (3,740 km2), of which 1,315 square miles (3,410 km2) is land and 130 square miles (340 km2) is water (9.0%).
