In 2015, the Democratic Republic of the Congo created 21 new provinces, including Kasaï.
Kasaï and Kasaï-Central provinces emerged from the fragmentation of the previous Kasaï-Occidental province.
Kasaï was founded by combining the Kasaï district and the separately administered city of Tshikapa, which became the capital of the new province.
