It is named after Silas Wright (D-New York), who was a Congressman, U.S. Senator, and Governor of New York.

As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the U.S. Census Bureau found that the average centre of the U.S. population was in the county, near the town of Hartville.

The county has a total area of 683 square miles (1,770 km2), of which 682 square miles (1,770 km2) are land and 1.4 square miles (3.6 km2) (0.2%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
