The county is named after Louis Winston, who lived from 1784 to 1824 and was a militia colonel, a well-known lawyer, and a judge on the Mississippi Supreme Court.
The county has a total area of 610 square miles (1,600 km2), of which 607 square miles (1,570 km2) are land and 2.8 square miles (7.3 km2) (0.5%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
