Yalobusha is a Muskogee language family Native American word that means “tadpole place.”

This area was long a traditional homeland for bands of the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indian tribes, who lived in present-day Mississippi and Alabama.

The county covers 495 square miles (1,280 km2), of which 467 square miles (1,210 km2) are land and 28 square miles (73 km2) (5.6%) are water.
