Washington County, Rhode Island

Washington County is a county in Rhode Island, United States, occupying the state’s southwestern corner along Block Island Sound and the Connecticut line. Locally it is known as South County. It had a population of 129,839 at the 2020 census and covers 563 square miles (1,460 km2), of which 329 square miles (852 km2) are land and 234 square miles (610 km2) are water — the state’s largest county by total area — centred near 41°27′N 71°35′W.

South Kingstown, whose village of Wakefield serves as the county’s judicial and commercial center, is the county seat; its postal code is 02879. Geography

Washington County occupies the mainland southwest corner of Rhode Island plus Block Island, 12 miles offshore in Block Island Sound. The terrain rises gently from a sandy Atlantic shoreline — punctuated by salt ponds such as Point Judith Pond, Ninigret Pond and Quonochontaug Pond — through rolling farmland and the granite hills of the Arcadia Management Area in the west, the state’s largest public forest. The Pawcatuck River forms most of the western boundary with Connecticut, and the Wood and Chipuxet rivers drain the interior into Narragansett Bay.

Washington County borders Kent County, Rhode Island to the north; Newport County, Rhode Island to the northeast, across Narragansett Bay; New London County, Connecticut to the west, across the Pawcatuck River; and the Atlantic Ocean and Block Island Sound to the south and east.

South Kingstown (31,931) and North Kingstown (27,732) are its two largest towns; New Shoreham, isolated on Block Island, is by far its smallest at 1,410. The University of Rhode Island’s main campus, in the village of Kingston (South Kingstown), is the county’s largest single employer and shapes the local economy around Wakefield and West Kingston. Commercial and recreational fishing remain central to Galilee, in Narragansett, one of New England’s busiest fishing ports and the ferry terminal for Block Island. Westerly’s granite quarries built much of 19th-century New England and the town today mixes light manufacturing with a busy summer tourist trade around Watch Hill and Misquamicut. History

The area was Narragansett and Niantic homeland before English colonists began farming it in the 17th century. Rhode Island’s colonial assembly organized it as Kings County in 1729; it was renamed Washington County on October 29, 1781, honoring George Washington during the Revolutionary War. South County’s large 18th-century plantations, worked partly by enslaved and indentured labor, gave the region an unusually aristocratic character for New England before the Civil War, and its granite and textile industries drove 19th-century growth in Westerly and the Wood River valley mill villages.

Getting There

U.S. Route 1 runs the length of the county along the coast, linking Westerly, Charlestown, South Kingstown and Narragansett; Interstate 95 crosses the western towns of Hopkinton and Richmond en route to Connecticut. Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor stops at Kingston Station in South Kingstown and Westerly station.
