Vernon County is in the western part of the U.S. state of Missouri, right next to the state line with Kansas.
As of the census in 2020, there were 19,707 people living there.
Nevada is the county seat.
The county was set up on February 27, 1855, which was much later than most counties in the east of the state.
It was named after Colonel Miles Vernon (1786–1867), who was a state senator and a veteran of the Battle of New Orleans.
This area used to be a part of the Osage Nation’s large territory in the past.
The county has a total area of 837 square miles (2,170 km2), of which 826 square miles (2,140 km2) are land and 10 square miles (26 km2) (1.2%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
