Texas County is a county in the southern part of the United States state of Missouri.

The population was 24,487 at the time of the 2020 census.

Houston is the county seat.

The county was founded in 1843 as Ashley County, but was renamed Texas in 1845 after the Republic of Texas. According to the 2010 United States Census, the county was the country’s population centre.

Texas County was established in 1843 and named after William H. Ashley, Missouri’s first lieutenant governor. It was later renamed the Republic of Texas and reorganised on February 14, 1845.

The county has a total area of 1,179 square miles (3,050 km2), of which 1,177 square miles (3,050 km2) is land and 2.0 square miles (5.2 km2) (0.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.

It is Missouri’s largest county in terms of land area.
