The population was 12,493 at the time of the 2020 census.
Hiawassee is its county seat.
On March 6, 1856, the county was established and named for lawyer, legislator, and politician George W. Towns.
The county has a total area of 172 square miles (450 km2), of which 167 square miles (430 km2) is land and 5.4 square miles (14 km2) (3.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
