Treutlen County lies in the South Georgia coastal plain, roughly 90% forested with longleaf and loblolly pine. History
The Georgia General Assembly proposed a constitutional amendment to create Treutlen County on August 21, 1917; voters ratified it on November 5, 1918, making it Georgia’s 154th county. It is named for John A. Treutlen, who became Georgia’s first governor after the 1777 state constitution was adopted. The area was originally part of the Muscogee homeland before Georgia’s westward land cessions opened it to settlement and, later, the timber industry that still shapes the county today.
