Thurston County is a county in the state of Washington in the United States.
As of the 2020 census, there were 294 793 people living there.
Olympia, the state capital, is the county seat and biggest city.
On January 12, 1852, Lewis County was split into Thurston County and Thurston County was made. At the time, it included the whole area around Puget Sound and the Olympic Peninsula.
On December 22, that same year, Pierce, King, Island, and Jefferson counties were separated from Thurston County.
It is named for Samuel R. Thurston, who was the first person from the Oregon Territory to go to Congress.
Thurston County is in the Seattle-Tacoma, WA Combined Statistical Area and is part of the Olympia-Tumwater, WA Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers 774 square miles (2,000 km2), of which 722 square miles (1,870 km2) are land and 52 square miles (130 km2) are water, or 6.7%.
