The county was named after Isaac Stevens, the first governor of Washington Territory, in 1863.

The county has a total area of 2,541 square miles (6,580 km2), of which 2,478 square miles (6,420 km2) is land and 63 square miles (160 km2) (2.5%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
