The population was 1,446, according to the 2020 census, making it South Dakota’s fifth-least populous county.
Onida is the county seat.
The county was established in 1873 and incorporated in 1883.
The fort is named after General Alfred Sully, who built it.
Sully County is part of the Pierre, South Dakota Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The land slopes south and east, but the west portion of the county slopes westward into the river valley.
At 1,949 feet (594 meters) above sea level, the county’s highest point is located along the midpoint of its north boundary line.
The county covers an area of 1,070 square miles (2,800 km2), of which 1,007 square miles (2,610 km2) is land and 63 square miles (160 km2) is water (5.9%).
